In 2020, 9th Ward Productions helped put its name behind an independent feature film that proved how far a locally rooted production could travel.
The film was Save Me, written and directed by El Paso filmmaker Christopher Jones. 9th Ward Productions served as an Executive Producer on the project, sharing the executive-producing credit with Iryss Ramirez.
Produced by New Hero Pictures and filmed in El Paso, Texas, Save Me followed Detective Arkin, a man devastated by the murder of his wife. After her killer is released, Arkin walks away from the police force and begins pursuing his own form of justice.
It was a story about grief, anger, vengeance, and the dangerous line between justice and retribution.
For 9th Ward Productions, the project represented more than simply having a company name in the credits. It was another opportunity to stand behind independent creators and help bring a story to life outside the traditional Hollywood system.
An El Paso film that found an audience
Save Me was produced in El Paso, joining the growing body of independent work coming from the Borderland's creative community.
But being locally produced did not mean the film stayed local.
At the 2020 El Paso Film Festival, Save Me won the Audience Award, one of the most meaningful distinctions an independent film can receive because it reflects the response of the people who actually sat down and watched the movie.
The film continued earning recognition on the festival circuit, including Best Feature Film at the Andromeda Film Festival, a Director Feature Film award at the Hollywood Gold Awards, and recognition from the Accolade Global Film Competition, Toronto Film Magazine Fest, Florence Film Awards, and Pure Magic International Film Festival.
For an independent production created far outside the traditional studio system, that journey mattered.
It demonstrated something 9th Ward Productions has continued to believe ever since: meaningful creative work does not have to begin in Hollywood to reach people.
More than music
Many people know 9th Ward Productions primarily through music.
That makes sense.
For years, the company has worked with independent artists, producers, musicians, and creative entrepreneurs. Its history stretches through Houston, New Orleans, El Paso, the Bronx, and beyond.
But Save Me is an important part of the 9th Ward story because it shows that the mission has never been limited to one creative medium.
Music, film, live performance, technology, and storytelling are different vehicles for the same basic idea: helping independent creators turn something that exists in their imagination into something real enough for the world to experience.
Six years after Save Me, that philosophy is bringing 9th Ward Productions back to feature filmmaking.
And this time, the ambition is considerably larger.
The next chapter: Until He Speaks
9th Ward Productions is now part of the producing team behind the upcoming feature film Until He Speaks, a faith-rooted psychological thriller inspired by true events.
The story centers on a mother whose 11-year-old son is bullied into a coma. When the systems meant to protect him fail, her search for justice pushes her toward the edge and forces her to confront faith, vengeance, and truths hidden beneath the silence.
At the heart of the story is a difficult question: What does justice cost when the person you love can no longer speak for himself?
Until He Speaks is being developed as more than a conventional thriller.
The film is designed to combine the emotional and commercial appeal of a psychological thriller with a larger social-impact mission centered on bullying, youth mental health, school accountability, child protection, trauma, faith, redemption, and second chances.
The project also plans to engage churches, schools, counselors, youth organizations, anti-bullying advocates, and community partners, using the film as a starting point for conversations around the real issues behind the story.
This is not simply a movie built to entertain.
It is a story built to leave something behind after the credits roll.
9th Ward returns to the producing table
9th Ward is not approaching Until He Speaks from the sidelines.
The current producing team includes Jay Davis as Producer, alongside creator and executive producer Jacinth Headlam, executive producer and lead actor King Moore, consulting producer Joanne Butcher, producer Antoine Allen, and screenwriter Maurice McCallum.
For 9th Ward Productions, there is something fitting about the progression.
In 2020, the company stood behind an independent El Paso feature that went on to win its hometown festival's Audience Award and receive recognition from festivals around the world.
Now comes the opportunity to build on that experience.
Different film. Different team. Different story.
But the same belief in independent creators and stories worth telling.
From one award-winning film to the next
There are no guarantees in filmmaking.
That is part of what makes independent film remarkable. Every production begins with an idea and a group of people willing to believe in it long before an audience ever sees the finished movie.
Save Me was one of those ideas.
What began as Christopher Jones' independent El Paso feature became an Audience Award winner and a multi-festival-recognized film. For 9th Ward Productions, it also became part of the company's creative history.
Now another film is beginning its journey.
Until He Speaks is currently being developed for a planned late-2027 arrival.
Its themes are heavier. Its mission is broader. And its creators are building toward a film designed not only to entertain, but to start conversations about children, families, justice, faith, accountability, healing, and second chances.
If Save Me showed what could happen when independent creators were given the opportunity to bring a story to life, Until He Speaks represents the next evolution of that idea.
The next chapter of 9th Ward Productions on film is being written now.
Stay tuned.
Until He Speaks
Coming late 2027.
